Auvers-sur-Oise, Vincent painted the original in June 1890

In his letter to his beloved brother Theo Vincent said,
“Mr Gachet seems to me to be just as ill
and as nervous as you and I, as well as
being much older. He lost his wife a few years ago,
but he’s a doctor, nevertheless, that’s what keeps
him going, this manual skill and belief, we’re quite
good friends already. I’m working on his portrait – his
head is covered by a white cap, his blond hair I’ve painted
in really light tones, the colour of the skin on his hands is
also really fair, a blue jacket, the background is a cobalt
blue, He props himself up against a red table on which
a yellow book and foxglove with purplish flowers stand,”
